Whether you have a trick or treater with T1D, or want to be supportive of a diabetic sibling, friend or family member, here are a few ways to make sure no one is left with scary blood sugar!
1. Plan a healthy, low carb dinner before you head out.
2. Plan your trick or treating route, how long you will stay out, and pack your usual snacks for maintaining a healthy blood sugar during activity and exercise.
3. Talk beforehand about how many pieces of candy everyone will enjoy that night. Print the attached carb count guide. Plan a tasty low-carb, high-protein snack to enjoy while “sorting” candy.
4. Plan to enjoy the candy in moderation for a few days, then find a location to donate extra candy to troops. Most cities have a location to drop off unopened candy to be shipped abroad. Some parents “pay” their kids to trade in their candy. (FYI at $.10 a piece, 100 pieces = $10)
