Diabetes Statistics

This Diabetes Awareness Month, in addition to our management tips and insights, we would like to share statistics to raise awareness about diabetes that you can share with your friends, family and co-workers.

According to the American Diabetes Association:

  • 30.3 million Americans have diabetes (that’s 9.4% of the U.S. population).
  • Of the 30.3 million that have diabetes, 1.25 million American adults and children have Type 1 diabetes.
  • Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes.
  • 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year — an estimated 40,000 people will be diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes each year.
  • Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes.
  • In 2015, 84.1 million Americans age 18 and older had prediabetes — a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal but are not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis.
